Nathan was on tour with a friend of his. 1,800 kilometres of driving per week. That was a lot of time for Nathan to be Nathan. And for his friend to be alone in a van with him. And for them to go, “This guy needs help.”
Nathan had a friend who saw a confused and overwhelmed person in the van with them, and who pointed him in the direction of resources and assistance. He was forced to think about his brain. A brain is an odd thing to think about. Thinking about a brain is like running about feet. So Nathan took his brain and ran with it. All the way to an ADHD diagnosis. Then he put it back in his head. Where it stays. Mostly.
Contrary to popular belief, ADHD is not a young boys’ club. It doesn’t discriminate based on gender, sexuality, ethnicity, race, or anything else. Be like ADHD.
Many disabilities are not immediately visible. Including other disabilities that Nathan and other members of the team deal with. If someone says they are struggling, believe them. Try to be understanding. Our brains, and sometimes our bodies, don’t work the same ways yours do. Sometimes it’s like we’re animals on the highway, with a car rapidly approaching. We’re just ADHDers in the headlights.
